The Secret To Peace

We all knew it existed, and tonight I was able to watch William Ury’s TED Talk in which he shares the not easy-but possible-secret to peace.  The talk can be watched at http://www.ted.com/talks/william_ury.html and for me it was the best 18 minutes of my day.

Highlights of William Ury’s talk include the idea that all conflicts have 3 sides.  You have side 1, side 2, and the most important one-side 3, which means you look at the problem from a higher perspective, you figuratively “go to the balcony” in order to get a bigger view of the issue.  Mr. Ury believes the key element is for “us” meaning those impacted by the issue to work together as a community in order to solve the problem.

Mr. Ury, who is the author of the book, “Getting to Yes” has even suggested a solution to the Middle East Conflict.  His solution is something called, “The Abraham Path”.  The idea behind it is for people to join together to walk the path of Abraham.  The reason this has started working is because all of us in one way or another are impacted by the historical figure, Abraham.  Walking the path with many different people from different backgrounds but with a common thread allows hostility to turn into hospitality and terrorism to turn into tourism, benefiting relationships and economics.
