Oh Christmas Tree!

A cold December day, tromping through my life’s version of Narnia, followed by hanging out in a warm cabin next to the cozy fireplace, sipping hot cider while listening to calm instrumental Christmas music; this describes one of my favorite parts of the holiday season: the annual trip to “Wards”, our local Christmas Tree farm to choose a live tree for the holidays.

I love getting a live tree for several reasons: 1.  It helps support a local farmer. 2. The Christmas Tree farm provides a natural place for animals to grow up and live through the year. 3.  Christmas trees help absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. 4. They are 100% recyclable.  5.  They make me happy!

I grew up with an artificial tree that lasted my parents about 30 years because my brother is allergic to real trees and certainly I can see the financial benefit and in his case health benefits of an artificial tree, but I am really grateful to be able to make an environmental decision for peace by purchasing a live tree.  If you don’t have a local tree farm near you, frequently you can find an organization like the boy scouts or some other group that sells live trees and wreaths to raise money for their organization.  If you do use an artificial tree you might want to consider using some of the money you saved by not buying a tree to donate to a charitable cause.
