Eucatastrophe
Eucatastrophe, a term originally coined by JR Tolkien, means a dramatic event that causes a shift resulting in the ultimate good for the protagonist of a story. My friend Josh introduced me to this word this week and I have been thinking about it since, and about times in my life when Eucatastrophe has occurred, those moments when the rock bottom was hit, when I’ve give up totally, and then things suddenly start to make sense or look better.
It has been during those times that The Serenity Prayer has been helpful to me: Grant me serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference. Today I am in the praying for wisdom category because we have just been hit by news that may be good and may be bad, that might can be changed, and might not be changed which will result in a lot of reshuffling of plans. The good thing is I don’t have to feel upset and angry about this news. Today I can have peace that even if I don’t know what it is, there is an answer and things will work out even if it wasn’t what I had dreamed of or hoped for. The universe is indeed unfolding as it should.
